All Aboard the Richard Welling Train

December 15, 2014 · Collections ·

I am coming to the end of the Richard Welling material I have left to catalog. This seems impossible considering how large the collection is, but I suppose everything ends sometime. I’ve been working for the past couple of weeks on cataloging Welling’s drawings of trains. The man loved trains. Like, LOVED them. He published a book about trains in 1977 called Amtrak AFT-1 Turbo old 97 Conrail H-36.34 and other friends. Today I just want to show a selection of drawings, some from the book and some not, so you can see just how into trains Welling was, and how he depicted them.

The Royal Scot and the Coronation Scot made a brief stop in Hartford in 1939 on their way to the New York World’s Fair.  When the Flying Scotsman visited Hartford in 1969, an article in the Hartford Courant recalled this earlier visit.  Richard Welling’s drawings accompanied this article.
