Biographical Sketch

Jack Dollard is an artist, architect and activist who came to Hartford, Connecticut after graduating from Cornell University. He arrived in the late 1950s to work for Charles DuBose, the chief designer of Constitution Plaza. Dollard went to Yale for his master’s degree.

Dollard was an urban planner and an advocate for Hartford. He served on the Planning Commission, the Downtown Council, the Design Review Board, and the Vision Project, to name just a few of his public roles. He also worked for 18 years as the planner for Aetna. He was responsible for the training center, the co-generation plant and other buildings.

In 2001 Dollard and his wife retired to Oaxaca, Mexico.

Scope and Content

Jack Dollard donated these papers in preparation for his move to Mexico. He boxed the materials from his own files and while the original order in the boxes, which was confused at best, was not maintained, his folder headings have been. Supplied headings are indicated by square brackets.

The files have been arranged roughly by topic, which is difficult given that Dollard’s activities frequently overlapped. The topics are Downtown Council, the Hartford Vision Project, South Arsenal (SAND), Aetna, Housing, and research files.

Dollard’s files contain minutes and agendas, his notes from meetings, published reports, and newspaper and magazine articles and clippings related to the projects in which he was involved. Some of the reports he collected include the position statement of the SAND Everywhere School, various downtown development plans, a census and demographic data on the Capitol Region Demographic Atlas, a historical survey on “The Connecticut Riverfront in the Greater Hartford Area”, reports from the Children and Family Development Focus Committee and other sub-committees of the Hartford Vision Project, Economic and Urban Design Action Strategy, 1998, studies of the Hartford Police Department, reports on economic disparities, and items related to the development of the Aetna campus. He also collected information on education, housing, recreation, taxation, and child development.

Included in these records are development reports on Bridgeport and Westport, Connecticut, and Troy, New York. Dollard’s activities related to the carousel in Bushnell Park in Hartford and notes from the class(es) he taught at Trinity College are also part of the collection.

Published books and magazines related to Dollard’s interest have been transferred to the library and can be found in the collection folder in the archivist's office. Photographs and drawings are in the Graphics Department.
