William Francis Dugan papersA Guide to the collection at the Connecticut Historical Society
Biographical SketchWilliam Francis Dugan was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 15, 1915, the son of Irish immigrants. In 1946 he married Marie C. Fuller of Stamford, Connecticut. William was employed by Waring Company, first at the New York City office and then in the Winsted, Connecticut office. The couple made their home in Simsbury, Connecticut. Marie was the daughter of Frank J. and Katherine Kornberger Fuller. The Fuller’s eldest daughter, Anne, married Thomas E. Downey. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentThe collection was purchased from the Dugan estate in Simsbury. It consists primarily of materials relating to William Dugan and his work with Waring Company along with some personal papers. Dugan’s papers are arranged in Series I. Papers relating to members of the Dugan and Fuller families are in Series II. Dugan’s papers include copies of his birth and baptismal certificates, discharge papers from the U.S. Army, 1945-1952, and his death certificate and estate papers, 1990. The records relating to Waring consist of a report on the history of the company’s performance which evidently was used in developing a long-range plan, 1965, 1967; orders from national and international companies, 1975-1985, recipes and cookbooks for use with Waring products; Dugan’s own patent for a blender that would not “explode”, 1969; his resume and press releases about his promotions; correspondence, 1980-1986; and company employee information. The correspondence is a mix of what appear to be legitimate letters to clients and an assortment of tongue-in-cheek replies that were written for his colleague’s amusement. His sense of humor also comes out in the illustrated menus and greeting cards he made. Marie Fuller Dugan kept a memento from her Stamford High School Senior Prom—a dance card, 1933. She also kept items from her time at Pratt Institute, namely grade reports, tuition tickets and her art notebook. Correspondence and pedigree papers for her dog, Sam, represent her interest in Yorkshire dogs. The couple took numerous pictures of their trip to Europe in 1977. Anne Fuller Downey is represented by her birth and baptismal certificates, 1912, pictures of a birthday party, and her funeral records, 1985. She married Thomas Downey in 1943, and their marriage certificate is included in their papers, along with a survey of land on Hillside Avenue, Darien, Connecticut, and the accompanying deeds, 1950, 1959, and the legal documents they executed when purchasing a cemetery plot. Thomas settled his mother, Florence’s, estate, 1972, and he himself is represented by a military discharge, 1946, and information concerning his William Francis Dugan Papers, 1912-1990 wife’s death, 1985. Frank Fuller, Marie and Anne’s father, had his senior discount cards from Caldor and Woolworth, the title to his burial plot in St. John’s Cemetery in Brooklyn, 1904, an incoming letter, 1930, and a copy of a dinner menu illustrated by William Dugan, 1988. Kathryn Fuller’s memorial documents, 1972 illustrate the high esteem in which she was held. Fuller family papers, namely letters from Connie to Ed, both of whom are unidentified, are in the final folder. Photographs are in the Graphics Department.
