Overview

The Dangremond Museum Studies Internship at the Connecticut Historical Society is an opportunity for students to gain exposure to and experience the many functions and daily operation of a history museum, library, and research center. The intent is to help students:

  • Apply the theoretical learning from their liberal arts education to a related nonprofit
  • Work closely with professionals to gain a deeper knowledge of the museum, library, and history fields
  • Gain broader exposure to opportunities beyond college and the classroom
  • Acquire first-hand access to a nationally-recognized institution and its renowned collection
  • Obtain the hands-on experience and skills valued by employers and graduate schools
  • Meet and network with CHS employees, interns, and volunteers
  • Work as part of a team and gain a broad understanding of how different departments function within an institution

Interns must complete 250 hours on task (generally 30 hours/week [including unpaid lunch hour] x 10 weeks) and are eligible for a $500 stipend.

  • Resume
  • Academic essay: no more than 2 pages describing how your academic goals, qualifications, and career aspirations relate to the internship at the Connecticut Historical Society
  • Copies of academic transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  • 2 letters of recommendation from professors, teachers, or former internship supervisors; emailed letters of recommendation should be sent directly from the reference to ben_gammell@chs.org

Application Deadline

All application materials must be received by March 9, 2018 at 4:00 pm (EST). Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.

Eligibility

  • Students of diverse backgrounds who are currently enrolled at a college or university and will have completed their sophomore, junior, or senior year by the beginning of the internship.
  • First year students and those who have previously participated in this same internship at the CHS are not eligible.

Selection Process and Final Decision

All applications will be reviewed as received with selected applicants invited for an interview. All applicants will be notified of the CHS’s decision by April 20, 2018.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a history major to be eligible for the CHS’s paid internship program?

No. We welcome applications from students with varied interests and backgrounds. In your cover letter, please be sure to outline coursework and experience that is relevant.

I am not a US citizen. Am I eligible to apply for an internship?

Yes. The internship program is open to international students.

Does CHS sponsor visas?

No. Although CHS will act as your host institution, we cannot sponsor your visa. If you are an international student interested in applying for this internship, please confirm with your college or university immigration advisor that you are eligible for a work authorization.

I missed the application deadline. May I submit a late application?

No. CHS does not accept late applications; there are no exceptions.

If I am accepted for an internship position, will CHS provide housing?

No. If you are accepted into the internship program, it is your responsibility to arrange your own housing and accommodations.

If I am not accepted for an internship position, may I reapply the following year?

Yes, as long as you are still eligible the following year. You will need to resubmit your application materials again. Please be sure to state on your application that you are reapplying.

If I am accepted for an internship position, can I earn academic credit for the work done?

Many institutions will not allow students to receive academic credit for an internship that comes with a stipend. However, with prior consent from your institution, you may be eligible. You must make arrangements to receive this credit with your institution before beginning your internship at CHS. The CHS cannot retrofit an internship program for academic credit, nor can we proactively craft this internship to be eligible for academic credit from any specific institution.
