FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Día de Muertos Community Celebration Returns!

HARTFORD, CT: The traditional Mexican Celebration of Día de Muertos returns to the Connecticut Historical Society on Saturday, October 30. Joined by the Mariachi Academy of New England, the CHS invites the public to enjoy and learn about the pre-Hispanic tradition where departed family members are welcomed in celebration of life and joy, and where it is customary to poke fun at death.

The event runs from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at 1 Elizabeth Street in Hartford, featuring mariachi music performances by Academy students and Mariachi México Antiguo. Free craft activities will be held from 10:00am-12:00pm; 12:30pm-2:30pm, and 3:00pm-5:00pm, and include sugar skull cookie decorating, making papel picado or cut-paper banners, and making paper marigolds. Ofrendas, or small altars that honor and celebrate those who have passed away, will be open to visit all day. Enjoy the special ofrenda by Hartford artist Carlos Hernández Chávez, and bring your own photographs of your muertos or deceased relatives, small mementos, or messages to contribute to our community ofrenda. The Tacos Flores food truck will be onsite with Mexican food available for purchase.

This year, we are offering additional opportunities to get involved:

We have limited space for ofrendas created by artists, organizations, students, and members of the public—if you want to participate, apply online at CHS.org, or call 860-236-5621.

Two free ofrenda-making workshops for teens and adults will be offered on Saturday October 23 from 2-4pm, and Monday October 25 from 6-8pm. Supplies are limited, so advance registration is required at CHS.org!

This event is supported by the Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation, Ellen Brown, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the CT Office of the Arts/DECD.

The mission of the Mariachi Academy of New England is to strengthen and bridge communities by enhancing children’s knowledge and appreciation of music, Spanish language, and Hispanic culture in the New England region.
