Felines and canines featured in new exhibit at the CT Historical Society in Hartford

Hartford, CT (September 6, 2012)

On September 27 the Connecticut Historical Society (CHS) makes history with Cats & Dogs in Art and Life, a new contemporary and historical exhibit focusing on our furry friends and how they impact our lives. The exhibit explores how cats and dogs are depicted in fine art, folk art, photography and decorative art throughout history and today.

“Cats and dogs are such an important part of so many people’s lives today,” according to CHS Director Kate Steinway. She continues, “This exhibit of images, documents, and historic objects helps tell the story of how our relationships with cats and dogs have evolved and changed over time as well as how they have inspired us, amused us, worked for us, and comforted us for centuries.”

The exhibit, Cats & Dogs in Art and Life, will consist of 3 galleries to include the following areas: “Man’s Best Friends”, “Caring for Cats & Dogs”, “Workers and Helpers”, “Part of the Landscape”, “Art Inspired by Cats & Dogs”, and a participatory portrait photography gallery to include images from the 1800s to today.

Calling all cats and dogs!, Adding a contemporary element to the historic exhibit, animal lovers can have their furry loved ones on display for everyone to see. By supporting Cats & Dogs in Art and Life with a donation of $10 or more through, patrons are able to submit their favorite photo of their canine or feline companion to become a part of the portrait gallery section of the exhibit.

Supporting activities for Cats & Dogs in Art and Life include an opening reception on September 27 for CHS members and the Furry Friends Pet Parade and Fair to be held on Sunday, October 14 on the grounds of the CHS. The event will include a pet parade, a pet costume contest, demonstrations, appearances by rescue and helper dogs, pet-related vendors and a stuffed pet parade for kids. Rain date is October 21. In addition, there are several family day activities scheduled: November 3 (Toys for Pets), January 5, 2013 (Design your own Pet Place-mats) and March 2, 2013 (Celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday with Cat in the Hat activities).
