Post-WWII evolution of the American backyard at CHS

Hartford Courant – Temperatures hover in freezing zone. But Connecticut Historical Society has its mind on a warmer time of the year, when suburbanites put on swimsuits, unfold chaise lounges, pour lemonade and light grills.

“Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the American Backyard,” which originated at Smithsonian Institution, chronicles the post-WWII changes in how Americans used their homes. The traveling exhibit has been enhanced by snapshots from Connecticut residents of their families enjoying their backyards.
