Brown Bag Lunch: NERFC fellow Bradley Dixon presents Republic of Indians

March 10, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Connecticut Museum of Culture and History invites our members to attend a brown bag lunch presentation and discussion on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 12:00 pm in the Dangremond Meeting Room, at One Elizabeth Street, Hartford, CT.

New England Regional Fellowship Consortium (NERFC) Fellow, Bradley J. Dixon is a doctoral candidate in the History Department at University of Texas at Austin. Dixon studies how Native Americans engaged with law during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.  His work focuses on Indians whom European empires claimed as subjects, exploring the debates about their status among Native and European leaders.  He is particularly interested in the ways that Spanish notions of justice helped to shape the English construction of the Indian legal subject.

While at the CMCH, Dixon plans to research several primary sources related to his topic, Republic of Indians: indigenous subjects and citizens in early America.  In particular he plans on using the William Samuel Johnson Papers, the Gurdon Saltonstall letters, 1693-1724, and the Samson Occom Papers, 1727-1808.

Please bring your own lunch. Dessert will be served.
