Fashion & Textile Council Annual Lecture: The Anatomy of an 18th-Century Gown

November 16, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Hallie Larkin (Past President of the Costume Society of America, Northeastern Region)  and Stephanie Smith bring their expertise in 18th-century costumes to the CMCH for a special presentation. The close examination of a period gown reveals many secrets of the mantua maker’s art. We will look at construction conventions in achieving an overall shape and appearance as well as what these tell us about the owner. Drawing on examples from the CMCH’s extensive collection of historic costumes, they will discuss how gowns were made in the mid-1700s.

Tickets are free for members of the Fashion & Textile Council, $10 for CMCH members and $15 for non-members. Space is limited, reservations required at [email protected] or 860-236-5621 x238.

Larkin and Smith have a website, At the Sign of the Golden Scissors,  that describes their many years of reenacting, teaching and research of 18th century clothing and their products for museums and individuals wishing to create an accurate 18th century wardrobe.
