Traditions without Borders

July 8, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Join us for the first public viewing of the short film, Traditions without Borders/Tradiciones sin Fronteras. This mini-documentary, directed by Boceto Media’s Maricarmen Cajahuaringa, showcases the cultural traditions surrounding The Lord of Miracles (el Señor de Milagros) in Hartford, which draws thousands of participants annually.

Over 30,000 Peruvians live in Connecticut, and this faith tradition is deeply rooted in the Peruvian community. In Hartford, the Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles (HESMIPERU), a religious fraternity organized locally in 1968, holds a mass and solemn procession through the streets around Our Lady of Sorrows Church, carrying its revered statue of the Lord of Miracles. The group and its women’s auxiliary organize festivities surrounding the ritual including food, dance, and music. Together, they provide insight into the vitality and importance of this cultural tradition.

Following the documentary will be a panel discussion about the film, featuring:

  • Maricarmen Cajahuaringa, Director and Founder of Boceto Media
  • Margarita Cortavarria, Producer and Host of Así es Mi Perú on Mega 101.7 FM
  • Elvis Tuesta, Consul General of Peru in Hartford
